Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services Announces Retirement of Chief Executive Officer
DAYTON, OH — (August 31, 2007)Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services (CBC/CTS) announces Chief Executive Officer, Judith E. Woll, M.D, will retire December 1, 2007.
“Dr. Woll has made a tremendous contribution to the growth and success of CBC/CTS as well as to the blood and tissue banking industries,” said James Lehner, M.D., President of CBC/CTS’ Board of Trustees. “During her 13 year tenure, Dr. Woll has facilitated the expansion of the Dayton campus to accommodate the increase in demand for blood and tissue.”
Among her many accomplishments at CBC/CTS, Dr. Woll has developed a local tissue bank into a national tissue network with locations throughout the United States. CTS is one of the five largest tissue banks in the United States and the largest non-profit provider of skin grafts to surgeons for severe burn patients. Under her leadership, the blood center expanded into two additional counties serving two additional hospitals. This growth of both blood and tissue has led to an increase in employees from 239 in 1993 to 572 in 2007. She has also instituted a research program for CBC/CTS focusing on human derived, biologic materials (bone, connective tissue, and skin), tissue engineering, molecular technologies, biomedical testing and microbiologic methods. Under Dr. Woll’s leadership, CBC developed the first Transfusion Safety program in the United States. In addition, Dr. Woll expanded CBC/CTS’ educational programs, including blood education in the schools, tissue technologist program in association with Sinclair Community College, Specialist in Blood Banking program in association with University of Texas Medical Branch, and closer relationship for physician training with Wright State University School of Medicine.
Dr. Woll joined CBC/CTS in 1994. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Woll served as the principal officer for American Red Cross Blood Services, Rochester, New York region. This region also had a small tissue bank. Dr. Woll began her career with the American Red Cross in 1988 as a director of the Rochester region. Previously, Dr. Woll was a clinician with Highland Hospital in Rochester, where she served as associate director (1974-75) and director (1975-88) of hematology/oncology and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester. In addition to her current position, Dr. Woll serves as a Clinical Professor of Pathology and Internal Medicine at Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton.
Dr. Woll is a member of several community service, academic and professional organizations. In Ohio, she serves on the board of trustees of Downtown Dayton Partnership, the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association, the Foundation for Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services, the Dayton Chamber of Commerce, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton. Nationally, she serves on the board of directors for the Pacific Northwest Transplant Bank. She previously served on the board of directors for America’s Blood Centers, as well as American Association of Tissue Banks.
Dr. Woll earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Brown University, Providence, R.I., followed by her degree as a M.D. from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. Through her training, Dr. Woll served internships and residencies at Roosevelt Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City and a fellowship in Hematology at the University of Rochester. She is Board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, Medical Oncology and Transfusion Medicine.
