Community Tissue Services - Dayton Earns Re-Accreditation by American Association of Tissue Banks

DAYTON, OHIO – Community Tissue Services - Dayton (CTS-D), a department of Community Blood Center (CBC), has received their re-accreditation by the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB).

Accreditation follows an on-site inspection of facilities and operations; banks are examined for compliance with all aspects of the association’s standards and procedures such as record keeping, quality control, quality assurance, donor and tissue suitability determination, and safety. Tissue banks are inspected on a three-year cycle. CTS-D has been accredited since 1990.

According to Dr. Judith E. Woll, CEO and Medical Director of Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services, “AATB Accreditation is an important accomplishment for CTS and demonstrates a strong commitment to our mission – to ethically provide procurement, processing, and distribution of quality tissue grafts serving donor families, physicians and hospitals, and our community partners.”

AATB initiated a program of inspection and accreditation of tissue banks in 1986 to help ensure that tissue banking activities are performed in a professional manner consistent with the standards. Tissue banks receive accreditation for their operation including retrieval, processing storage and/or distribution of tissue.

The mission of AATB is to ensure that tissue of uniform high quality is available in quantities sufficient to meet national needs with maximum economy. The Accreditation Program helps to realize this goal by ensuring the tissue-banking activities are being performed in a professional manner consistent with the AATB’s standards.

CTS began operations in 1986 and is currently one of the largest tissue banks, distributing nearly 10% of the tissue grafts in the United States. CTS is the largest non-profit provider of skin grafts to surgeons for severe burn patients.
