QuadricepsTendonAllograftsareBiomechanicallyEquivalenttoAchillesTendonAllograftsIsaacMabeM.S.andShawnA.HunterPh.D.AbstractQuadricepstendonwithapatellarboneblockmaybeaviablealternativetoAchillestendonoranteriorcruciateligamentreconstructionACL-Riitisataminimumabiomechanicallyequivalentgrat.TheobjectiveothisstudywastodirectlycomparethebiomechanicalpropertiesoquadricepstendongratstoAchillestendongrats.QuadricepsandAchillestendonpairsromninedonorsninemalesmeanage56.9yearsrange37-74yearsweretestedinaphysiologicenvironmentalchamberundersub-ailureandailureloadingregimes.Theresultsshowedthattherewerenostatisticaldierencesinsevenoeightstructuralandmechanicalpropertiesmaximumloadstinessmaxi-mumstressmaximumstrainstrainatmaximumstressmodulusoelasticityandcyclicelongationbetweenthetwotendontypes.Thesignifcantlyhigh-erdisplacementatmaximumloadobservedorquadricepstendonsmayberelatedtotheailuremode.Whilespecimensailedeitherbyboneavul-sionorrupturingothetendonmid-substanceAchillestendonshadahigheravulsionratethanthequadricepstendons89comparedto22respectively.Thiswaslikelyduetoobserveddierencesinboneblockdensitybetweenthetwotendontypes.ThisresearchsupportstheuseoquadricepstendonallogratsinlieuoAchillestendonallogratsorACL-R.
